(KENNEDY, JOHN F.) Archive of Kennedy presidential campaign documents and related papers.

(KENNEDY, JOHN F.) Archive of Kennedy presidential campaign documents and related papers. 341 items (0.5 linear feet) in 12 folders; mostly typescripts, carbon copies, mimeographs, and printed matter, a few with manuscript annotations, including 193 press releases from the campaign and inauguration, 40 complete or partial Kennedy campaign speeches (8 of them annotated by staffers), policy papers, travel itineraries, and more; condition generally strong except for moderate dampstaining to some of the press releases. Vp, 1957-63 (bulk September-October 1960)

  • Notes: Most of this collection consists of internal documents from the frenetic final months of Kennedy's 1960 presidential campaign. It includes several heavily edited Kennedy campaign speeches; a group of mimeograph or carbon campaign itineraries, one of them addressed to Kennedy in the first person ("Michigan State Fair. Motorcade takes you to State Fair Grounds for a few brief remarks . . . . This is a holiday crowd and remarks should be generally nonpartisan"); and many more official campaign documents. It also includes non-campaign Letters Signed by Ralph Yarborough and William Proxmire, and a 1962 anti-Kennedy mock-fundraising letter which concludes with a disturbingly racist poem, "De Black Spangled Banner." An inventory is available upon request. Provenance: acquired at the March 2012 estate sale in Austin, TX of Creekmore Fath (1916-2009), a leader of the liberal wing of the Democratic Party in Texas who was involved with the campaign. Originally found among this group were some campaign speeches annotated by Kennedy; these have been offered in Swann's March 19 autograph auction.
