(KENNEDY, JOHN F.) Dow Jones News Service ticker from the Kennedy assassination.

"PRESIDENT KENNEDY WAS SHOT TODAY" (KENNEDY, JOHN F.) Dow Jones News Service ticker from the Kennedy assassination. 9 teletype sheets, each 6 1/4 wide, with varying lengths up to 37 inches; folds, sheets numbered in pencil 16 through 23 and 25, stapled in upper left corner. Np, November 22 1963

  • Notes: This ticker begins with three bits of rather dry financial news, interrupted with a shocking report: "President Kennedy shot. Dallas AP. President Kennedy was shot to day just as his motorcade left downtown Dallas. Mrs Kennedy jumped up and grabbed Mr Kennedy. She cried oh no. The motorcade sped. AP photographer James W Altgens said he heard two shots but thought someone was shooting fireworks until he saw the blood on the president." Most of the following sheets are devoted to the awful news as it developed. The first report of the president's death is on the third page: "Two priests who were with Kennedy say he is dead of bullet wounds." The manhunt for the killer culminates on the penultimate page with the capture of "a 24-year-old man Lee H Oswald." The ticker closes at 4:59 p.m. with the end of the business day. This broad ticker tape is wider than the better-known stock ticker tape that rained down on parades for many years, but was a feature in the larger firms in the financial service industry.
