KENNEDY, JOHN F. Typescript, unsigned, with scattered holograph annotations or corrections, mostly complete reading copy of the speech

SERENADING THE FARMER VOTE: NATIONAL PLOWING CONTEST SPEECH KENNEDY, JOHN F. Typescript, unsigned, with scattered holograph annotations or corrections, mostly complete reading copy of the speech he delivered at the National Plowing Contest in Sioux Falls, SD, on September 22, 1960. Approximately 35 holograph words, in green or blue ink, most written between printed lines, some annotations in other hands. The text of the campaign press release includes most of the manuscript changes introduced in this typescript. 20 pages, 4to, written on rectos only; lacking pages 3-5, some cockling throughout, faint scattered dampstaining, scattered smudging to inscriptions (but mostly legible), staple holes at upper left. Np, circa 22 September 1960

  • Notes: The printed speech begins, "I am here to present my program," which JFK has expanded with holograph additions to read: "I am here as the Democratic standard bearer to present my program for American agriculture." On the second and third pages, the printed text describes failed Republican policies: "I cannot believe that the American farmer is ready to be fooled again," which JFK has corrected by striking out "fooled" and writing in its place "moved in that direction." In the margin of a paragraph on the technological revolution, JFK has written some notes that were not incorporated into the press release text: "At this time of decision . . . ."
