- Notes: Lee-Smith (1915-1999) studied at Cleveland Museum of Art and Wayne State University; worked for the WPA; taught at Claflin University in South Carolina. Has had more than 40 solo exhibitions since 1945; in 1984 the city of Cleveland declared a Hughie Lee-Smith day. His work is represented in, among others, the National Gallery, San Diego Museum, and the Neuberger Museum.
