LENNART NILSSON (1922-2017 ) Photograph of a live fetus in utero, from the series A Child is Born.

LENNART NILSSON (1922-2017 )
Photograph of a live fetus in utero, from the series A Child is Born. Dye transfer print, the image measuring 21 5/8x19 inches (54.9x48.3 cm.). Circa 1965; printed before 1971

Provenance: Gift of the Photographer to the Creative Director of the Continental Group Inc., who used this image in 1971 on an award-winning advertisement campaign.

Nilsson was a Swedish photojournalist. In the late 50s, he started experimenting with new photographic techniques, using microscopes to "get closer." His revealing macro studies of the human body's inner mysteries were a big sensation and were published in magazines and books worldwide. In 1965 his groundbreaking images illustrating the beginning of life, from conception to birth, were published in the book A Child is Born, which was a sensation and has since been translated into twenty languages.

  • Condition: Nilsson's groundbreaking image displays rich and vibrant tonalities, as typical of the dye transfer process.

The surface of the print evidences an overall tiny pattern of cracklure, likely related to the dry mounting tissue that remains on print verso. This is most apparent when viewing the print under strong, raking light, but the tiny imperfections across the surface are also somewhat visible under normal viewing conditions. Less apparently, the print also shows a faint crease at the far edge of the fetus and a tiny white spec of emulsion loss (hardly noticeable; in lower part of the womb). Other imperfections are confined to the edges of the image and not disruptive when viewing at the image. These include: several unobtrusive handling creases on the left and lower edges, and clusters of diagonal creases on the extreme corners.

Finally, there are no margins on the print, and a few small and scattered chips may be found at the extreme edges. While apparent, these are not obtrusive to the image.

This large format print is astonishingly bright and detailed, and despite the condition imperfections serves as a striking example of Lennart Nilsson's groundbreaking imagery in the 1960s.
