LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) ZOO BERLIN. Circa 1935. 23x16 inches. Herm. Sonntag, Munich.
LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) ZOO BERLIN. Circa 1935.
23 1/2x16 1/2 inches. Herm. Sonntag, Munich.
Condition A. Paper.
Hohlwein''s work for the Munich zoo, and his tireless stream of animal images, made him desirable to other municipalities with zoos to advertise. For Berlin he places the head of a lynx against a leafy background. The shading of the foliage compellingly echoes the mottled pelt of the cat, and the way the cat fills the poster suggests how close visitors can get to the animals at the zoo.
