First edition, oversized folio; illustrated with 24 full-page colored aquatints; text in English and French; bound in later half blue morocco with cloth-covered boards (rubbed, corners bumped); plates printed on wove J. Whatman paper with 1801 watermark; [with] 2 additional hand-colored aquatints by Mayer loosely inserted: Church of the Holy Sepulchre, interior; and Sarcophagus from the Tombs of the Kings, both printed in London by R. Bowyer in 1810; 19 1/4 x 13 1/2 in.

Mayer composed these views for British diplomat Sir Robert Ainslie while he served as British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. His subjects include important sacred sites in Jerusalem and its environs, including a view of Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the Pool of Bethesda, the Pool of Siloam, the Tomb of Absalom, the Valley of Jehoshaphat, and Bethlehem.
