Messager, Annette (b. 1943) & Jean-Philippe Toussaint (b. 1957) Enveloppe-Moi.

Messager, Annette (b. 1943) & Jean-Philippe Toussaint (b. 1957)
Enveloppe-Moi.

New York: Library Council of The Museum of Modern Art, 2013.

Limited edition portfolio, copy number 14 of 110 numbered copies, signed by Messager and Toussaint in pencil on the limitation leaflet; with 9 pigment prints of collages by Messager, two sets of 15 postcards, one set with blank versos and the other with facsimiles of Toussaint's handwritten comments on versos, each set in a glassine envelope, with one digitally-printed photograph by Toussaint together and a digitally printed letter by him, both housed in a glassine envelope, and the aforementioned limitation leaflet and a list of titles; all housed in the original publisher's red cloth clamshell portfolio by Mark Tomlinson, printed with black silkscreen lettering by Messager on the inside top lid; pigment prints: 11 x 14 in.; postcards: various sizes.

"Over a five-month period in 2011, Messager sent 15 postcards, one by one, to Toussaint. Each card features on one side a black-and-white photograph of one of Messager's preexisting artworks. The collection of postcard images presents a series of indefinite but suggestive images of obscured words, phrases, nets, and body parts. Toussaint replied on the blank side of each postcard with brief comments, questions, and literary references apparently prompted by the image on the opposite side. A second set of postcards reproduces the same artworks by Messager, but these postcards are still blank on the writer's side. At the artist's suggestion, readers may consider sending the "virgin" postcards (as the artist describes them) to another correspondent." (MoMA)
