Michael Engelmann 1928 Roth-Handle Cigaretten. 1958 33.5 x 23.75 inches. Moritz Schauenburg Larg, Schwarzwald. Condition A. A largely self-taught artist, it wasnt until Engelmann went to the United States in 1941 that he devoted himself to advertising art and graphicdesign. Upon his return to Germany in 1949, he became the art director of the Neue Zeitung in Munich, and also worked for major clients like Pirelli and Roth-Handle cigarettes, for whom he designeda series of ads of which this poster is a part. The popular, non- filter tobacco cigarette is easily recognizable by its vintage, turn-of-the-century-type packaging. Engelmann draws attention to the packaging and the old-world romanticism it suggests, by creating an image in which a pack of Roth-Handle cigarettes is being held in a hand also drawn in the same nineteenth-century illustration style. The middle finger of the hand is also pointing to the word "natural,"further highlighting Roth-Handle's quality. ref. Deutsche and Europaische Plakate, Munchner Stadt Museum, 1982
