Mihaly Biro 1886-1948 Humanic Schuhfabrik. 73.5 x 49 inches. Adadie,Vienna. Condition B+: restoration along horizontal folds: minor restoration in margins. Two-sheets. Born in Budapest, Mihaly Biro studied art in Berlin, Paris, and London before returning to Hungary, where he became a prominent young designer. He was an active part ofthe Hungarian revolutionary movement and in 1919 had become the political poster commissar of the Hungarian Socialist Republic, creating such images as his famous giant red worker with a huge hammer for Nepszava. When the Conservatives came back into power, Biro had to flee to Vienna, where he eventually settled, working in the political field this time for the Social-Democrats and also for the movies and the commercial field. He designed excellent posters for Meinl Kaffee as well as for this shoe company, where we see expressed his love for gigantic allegories and the color red. On the left side of the image, the letters become the same size as the buildings making this product literally part of the city landscape, with the shoe placed atop the letter "I" all dwarfing the miniature cars and pedestrians below. The text is grouped and well-organized below, on the right. Very Rare. ref The Poster by Alain Weill, p. 260261
