MOLINIER, PIERRE (1900-1976)
Portfolio containing 16 studies of the French performance artist, Thierry Agullo, in drag. Cibachrome prints (from the original transparencies), 7 inches (17.8 cm.) square, with the printer's credit hand stamp, a copyright hand stamp, and a photographer's credit and print number hand stamp on verso. Folio, black cloth. 1976; printed 1992
- Notes: In 1976, Pierre Molinier committed suicide by shooting himself. Sexually obsessed, his highly erotic photography often included superimposed images of his own visage in drag. In the year prior to his death, he befriended the artist Thierry Agullo. A short while before killing himself, Molinier arranged this session with Agullo. He ordered garments made specially for the artist and also asked him to shave his entire body. Tragically, Agullo died in a car accident in 1980 with some of these transparencies in the car with him. The owner of the car, Jacques Donguy, inherited the transparencies and had proofs printed by Roland Dufau. This is one of only 5 sets made.
