Movieland 1954.
Lithograph, 13 1/4x20 3/4 inches oblong, full margins. Signed by Hirschfeld and numbered 5/250 in pencil, lower margin. 1984.
"Patience is what is required for a complicated drawing like this. It's the research and the correlating of all the material that's the hard work. Doing the drawing itself wasn't difficult, but figuring out how to get everybody on there was an interesting project. It's actually a mural, of American movie stars, that I did for Fifth Avenue Cinema.
You start in the lower left with the screen sirens, the vamps, and above them are the screen villains, all trying to knock each other off. And, well you just have to follow it around all the way to the legendary aristocracy of Hollywood at lower right." HOL/121.
Visible, among many others, are Bette Davis, Clark Gable, Groucho, Harpo and Zeppo Marx, Mae West, Fred Astaire, Katharine Hepburn, Oscar Levant, Buster Keaton, and Milton Berle.
