Zero Mostel as Tevya in "Fiddler on the Roof."

Etching, 10 3/4x10 3/4 inches, full margins. Mat burn, not affecting image or signature. Signed by Hirschfeld and numbered 4 4/150, lower margin. 1975.
"One evening, returning from a tryout of Fiddler on the Roof in Boston, I discovered, from my sketches, that the vest worn by Zero Mostel buttoned the wrong way for a man. I phoned Boris Aronson, the show's designer, and asked whether my sketches were in error or were the men's clothes purposely designed that way....He assured me that in the period Sholom Aleichem was writing about there was no difference in the buttoning of coats worn by Jewish men and women - and yes, they were designed that way in the production... I went ahead with my drawing, leaving out this well-researched piece of costuming. I deliberately dressed Zero in a conventionally buttoned vest to avoid crank mail." WOH/26
