(MUSIC.) DOUGLASS, JOSEPH. Silver print photograph of Frederick Douglass' grandson, Joseph Douglass and his wife Fannie Howard Douglas

(MUSIC.) DOUGLASS, JOSEPH. Silver print photograph of Frederick Douglass' grandson, Joseph Douglass and his wife Fannie Howard Douglass, 9-3/8 x 6-1/2 inches, on the original photographer's cardboard mount Np, circa 1910-1915

  • Notes: Joseph Douglass (1871-1935) was a groundbreaking African American violinist and grandson of Frederick Douglass. He is pictured here with his wife Fannie Howard Douglass, an accomplished pianist who often accompanied him. Douglass received his first big break as a concert violinist at the age of 22 when he performed at the World's Columbian Exposition, also known as the Chicago World's Fair. On August 25, 1893 performers joined together to celebrate Colored American Day (which Frederick Douglass helped plan). Douglass was also the first violinist- of any race- to make recordings for the Victor Talking Machine Company in 1914; unfortunately they were never released.
