  • Condition: This portrait of the French novelist and feminist George Sand (1804-1876), circa1864; printed 1876-77 by Nadar is overall in very good condition. The print is luminous and replete with fine details, and a rich tonal value ranging from warm black to expanded mid-tone grays.

Under close examination, the surface evidences very slight and unobtrusive surface imperfections which are primarily located around the image area. There is a black spec in the lower left quadrant in the dress, the lower left corner evidences a tiny tear and a bit of emulsion loss, as well as a small area of residue lighter in tone in the lower right edge. Also visible in strong raking light only, are very faint rubs in the background, but even here it is quite unobtrusive and does not detract from the overall impactful composition.

Finally, tiny chips may be found around the edges (the print has no margins), but here as well, it remains discreet and unobtrusive.

The mount recto is mostly clean, with a few foxing specs and a small accretion in the upper right margin. The tip of the upper right corner is the missing, and the upper left corner evidences a vertical hard crease. They do not impact Nadar's printed credit, title, location, and publisher on mount recto. The mount verso scattered foxing specs.

    A beautiful Woodburytype impression.
