"NEAR THE LAST WORD IN HORSE" REMINGTON, FREDERIC. Autograph Letter Signed, in full, to Joel Burdick, written the week before his unexpected death, thanking Burdick for his friendship, referring to his paintings as "his babies," hoping that they will increase in value after he is gone, commenting on how to get art into the public, informing him of the price of one of his works, trying to arrange a visit and writing that he has made a large Bronco Buster which is "pretty near the last word in horse." 3 pages, folded 8vo sheet, Lorul Place stationery; usual folds, minor staining at corner from prior mounting. Ridgefield, 18 December 1909
- Notes: "My Dear Birdie, You are the best man I have working for me - you are chief of staff. And the beauty of you is that you work cheap. You really only cost me four or five meals a year. You have got more coming to you but you don't seem to get around to them. Oh, be good, if it wasn't for our friends what would be the use. In my way of life I can't do much for you but I would if I knew how. Well, I am glad your friends like the paintings. It is a source of great satisfaction to think that the creatures of my brain are in appreciative hands. They are my babies. My only hope is that after I am gone, they will grow up to be big fellows. Who knows, Remingtons in 50 years may bring 'Old Master' prices. There wouldn't be anything strange about it. Read the February 'Scribners'. I had a good sale and made a bit. The press took the bridle off and said all the nice things they knew. They have been 'heming & hawing' before but have stopped that. One has got to get his art into the public like they put early Christianity into the heathen, with a club. I have marked West Penn up to $10,000. I wouldn't take that but it makes good reading. Come out here and sit around a Sunday when you can. You are a sort of cheerful idiot and when you go away Monday morning I feel brighter and richer and move more on the air and less on the tax ridden facts of life. I have just made a 11/2 size Bronco Buster and it is a Pizzaza - d[amn] if it isn't pretty near the last word in horse."
