Nell, William C. The Colored Patriots of the American Revolution, with Sketches of Several Distinguished Colored Persons . With an Introduction by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Engraved frontispiece and folding facsimile of a Revolutionary War Certificate of Honourable Discharge signed by George Washington. 8vo, publisher's blind-stamped cloth; small cloth repair to crown with some loss of cloth to heel. Boston: Walcutt, 1853 E500-750 Greatly expanded version of a 23-page pamphlet written in 1851 Nell 1816-1874 was an active abolitionist, lecturer, journalist, historian, and one of the first African-Americans to be nominated to a Federal post. Born free in Boston, Nell graduated from a mixed school where, though an honor student, He was denied a prize because of his colon. He studied law, and became associated with Garrison's Liberator. In 1840 Nell worked with Garrison and others to desegregate Boston's schools. The added section " Prospects of Colored Americans,' deals with the civil rights of African- Americans at this time.
