(NEW YORK.) Boos, J.E. 3 scrapbooks relating to Albany and the Erie Canal.

(NEW YORK.) Boos, J.E. 3 scrapbooks relating to Albany and the Erie Canal. 3 volumes. 8vo, various bindings, condition generally excellent. Typed historical essays extra-illustrated with original 19th-century manuscripts. Compiled in Albany, 1924-1942

  • Notes: An Albany history buff compiled these odd volumes. His methodology is explained in his introduction to the 1942 volume: "I was snooping through the mass of paper that is daily dumped into the waste hole in the basement of New York State''s Capitol one morning in 1940 when I discovered a pile of old documents pertaining to the canals . . ." Each volume includes 19th-century manuscript material, some of substantial interest: pay receipts signed by canal laborers in 1819, canal navigation certificates from the 1840s, an 1871 loyalty oath signed by the assistant weigh-master at Syracuse, and much more. The historical essays by Boos are also interesting.
