NICOLAS TIKHOMIROV (1927-2016) A group of 9 photographs documenting political instability and civil war in Cold War-era Laos.

NICOLAS TIKHOMIROV (1927-2016)
A group of 9 photographs documenting political instability and civil war in Cold War-era Laos. Silver press prints, the images measuring approximately 9¼x6¼ inches (23.5x15.9 cm.), and the reverse, the sheets 10x8 inches (25.4x20.3 cm.), each with a caption label with Tikhomirov's credit and date, two with Chronicle Files stamps, one with Tikhomirov's credit stamp, and two with press clippings, on verso. 1961

  • Condition: This group of press photographs made by Nicolas Tikhomirov in Laos is in very good condition. The tones are contrasty and rich, and though the surfaces evidence the scattered surface imperfections associated with the format, the images are unobscured and strong.

The surfaces are ferrotyped and show scattered faint surface inconsistencies associated with this process. The prints also show very faint and soft scattered handling marks, tiny impressions, or very slight rippling at the edges, all of which is associated with the press format. The rippling is related to the labels applied to verso. However, this is all unobtrusive and largely only visible when examining the prints quite carefully.

The surfaces are clean. The image of a mourner sitting with a casket evidences a very faint stain at the top left corner, but this is minor. The imae of a Laotian listening to the radio on a step also has a tiny isolated stain near the lower edge.

Two of the prints have red grease pencil editorial markings in the margins, not impacting the image area. The backs are also overall clean, a couple showing just slight staining or soiling.

Overall a compelling group documenting the Cold War-era violence and instability that racked Laos.
