ONE OF THE RAREST SLAVE NARRATIVES (SLAVE NARRATIVE.) Gronniosaw, James Albert Ukawsaw. A Narrative of the Most Remarkable Particulars in the Life of James Albert Ukawsaw Gronniosaw, An African Prince. 48 pages. 8vo, contemporary wrappers from binder's waste; some dampstaining throughout; untrimmed. Newport: S. Southwick, 1774
- Notes: first american edition; originally published in Bath in 1770. Gronniosaw was born in Baurnou, Nigeria. He was taken a slave at the age of fifteen and sold three times, ending up in Barbados. His final owner, a minister, freed him on his death bed and left him ten pounds. Gronniosaw remained with his former owner's family for a time and then joined the British Army, serving in Cuba and Martinique. He went to England in 1762, took the name of James Albert and married a poor white woman. This narrative was probably taken down and edited by Walter Shirley, whose name appears at the end of the Preface. Evans 1311.
