Pay Voucher and final accounting for Private George Payne, 24th Infantr y, "Buffalo Soldiers." Two Documents. Folio sheet, printed document, filled out by hand, annotated in margin and docketed; with: another printed document, filled out by hand. Single sheet, 4to, 20 April 1875, deducting cost of Private Payne's travel from Fort Brown to "his place of residence, Jackston," $33.12. Fort Brown, Texas, 20; 24 April 1875 E350/500 SIGNED BY PAYNE-apparently literate-and frugal. His only deduction from accu-mulated $141.09 was .53 for tobacco. Born in Saulsbury, South Carolina, Payne did three one-year tours with the 24th; released at Fort Brown, 1875. Note in first document margin reads: "A private from the time of his enlistment to May 1st, 1872, a non commissioned officer from that date to June 30th, 1872." Apparently Payne lost his stripes between 1872 and 1875.
