State of Connecticut Treasury Office, 1780 E800/1,200 UNCOMMON REVOLUTIONARY PAY VOUCHER. According to Connecticut Black Soldiers 1775-1783, "Lebbeus of Norwich is listed on some records as a free black who had a family requiring supplies while he was away in the army. However there is another reference to being freed in 1777 by Daniel Brewster, in consideration of his now Ingaging [sic] to serve in the Continental Service during the present Warr.' Thus Qui (or Quy) enlisted not as a free man but as a slave looking towards obtaining his liberty." [SEE ILLUSTRATION]
