Np ( probably Fort Sill, Indian Territory), 31 May 1872 E200/300 Spencer distinguished himself in a battle with Comanches on Cache Creek, Indian Territory, near Fort Sill in 1872. After bitter fighting, and left with only 12 men, he urged them on, swimming across the rain-swollen Red River in pursuit. He fought under Colonel Benjamin Grierson, known for his "brunets," or colored troops.
