Bacon and published by order of the Board of Education of "The Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery." 16 pages. 8vo, disbound. Philadelphia: T. Ellwood Chapman, 1856 E400/600 FIRST EDITION of the third, most detailed study of the Philadelphia colored commu-nity; written by a Black Philadelphian. Library Company of Philadelphia's Negro History, 1553-1903 states: "It is amazing that successive sociological studies of the Negro community should have been made so early. We know of none earlier" (referring to 1838 version-see previous lot). Bacon emphasizes literacy figures and schools. These works were used by W. E B.
