[ Photographs ] (Australia) Panoramas Outstanding presentation album entitled "Panoramic Views of the City of Sydney and Harbour, New South Wales," comprising 11 impressive fold-out, multi-part panoramas featuring views of the city of Sydney, a 6-part -panorama of the grounds of the Sydney International Exhibition, an 8-part panorama of a fairground with the ladies's show Jumping trial in progress and agricultural exhibits, a 5-part panorama of a cricket match captioned in the negative "Stoddart's team V combined. Australia First Test Match 1895," and a 3-part panorama of the Zig-Zag Railway. Albumen prints, various sizes, from 15 x 30 to 12 x 79 inches, mounted one per page, most titled in the negative. Oblong folio, gilt-lettered morocco contents crisp and clean. Sydney: Charles Potter, Government Printer, 1896 E4000-6000 With - Companion album entitled "Photographs, New South Wales," containing 100 vital images of Sydney and environs including the International Exhibition, Botanical Gardens and parks, Government House, Government and public buildings, interior of Centennial Hall, churches, colleges, asylum and hospitals, banks, railway yards, street scenes and views of the surrounding towns and railway stations including Orange, Bathurst Goulburn, and ships at New Castle. Printing-out paper prints, 10.5 x 14 inches or the reverse, mounted one per page, recto and verso, titled in the negative. This fine set of albums was given to Lady Darley, wife of Sir Frederick Darly, who was acting Governor of New South Wales from March 16 to November 20, 1895 Several of the images in these albums appear in the exhibition catalogue Masterpieces Of Australian Photography (Sydney, 1989) This book states on p. 82 that the Government Printer employed many photographers, hence attribution to any one tographer is difficult, also that "contemporary prints.. are rare, and very few are held by the Government printer today.
