[ Photographs ] (CARTES-DE-VISITE) Civil War, Album containing 81 cartes-de-visite and 2 tintypes, with a strong group of images of Civil War notables, featuring over 20 by Brady, including a fine image of Custer, (Katz-31), and the 1860 photograph Of Lincoln, (0-17), later described by the president as the portrait that put him in the White House, as well as Brady portraits of Generals Grant, Sherman, Gregg, Hancock,Warren, Keyes, and Jackson, among others, and with period copy cdv's and reproductions; as well as cartes-de-visite of Presidents John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson, and cassius Clay and Henry Ward Beecher; Anthony photographs of William Seward Brigham Young, and Generals Scott, Mansfield, and Lane, posed wearing a top hat and holding a bayonet; Fredericks 12 portraits of Daniel Webster and Henry Clay; in addition to Napoleon III, members of the Japanese embassy, Washington Irving, and Tennyson; and a group of approximately 23 portraits of various men and women, possibly connected to the compiler of the album. The prints are mounted 2 per page, recto and verso, each in an arch-topped window mount; 13 with Brady's credit written in the negative, all but 10 with their photographer's and/or pubhsher's credit printed on mount recto and/or verso, one with a revenue stamp on verso and the majority captioned, in an unidentified later hand, in pencil, on window mount or mount recto and/or verso. Oblong 4to, gilt-decorated leather, scuffed, lacks spine, covers detached; lacks one brass clasp; all edges gilt; contents clean. Middle-late 1860s [See Also Illustration Over- Leaf]
