PIERRE BONNARD La Rue.

PIERRE BONNARD
La Rue.

Lithograph on imitation Japan paper, 1927. 240x180 mm; 9 1/2x7AF1/8> inches, full margins. Edition of 25. Signed in pencil, lower right. Published by Emile-Paul Frères, Paris. From Tableux de Paris. A very good impression of this scarce print.

Bonnard (1867-1947) was a prominent Parisian painter and one of the Nabis, artists influenced by Paul Gauguin's direct approach to colors and religious themes, who also included Maurice Denis and Paul Sérusier. He was also, along with Toulouse-Lautrec, one of the most important poster designers of his day.

Bonnard's direct observation of everday Parisian street life bears close similarities to Whistler's printed work of the 1880s/1890s and vice versa. Several of Whistler's late lithographs, including Mother and Daughter (La Mère Malade), lot 151, were printed by the Parisian Auguste Clot, who also worked with Bonnard at the time. Whether they ever met is unclear, but it seems certain that Bonnard and Whsitler were well aware of each others prints. Bouvet 105.
