POSTER: LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) [BAYRISCHE CAMPAGNE REITER GESELLSCHAFT.] 1909. 49x35 inches. Vepeinigt Druckereien und Kunstenstalten, Mun
LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) [BAYRISCHE CAMPAGNE REITER GESELLSCHAFT.] 1909.
49 1/8x35 5/8 inches. Vepeinigt Druckereien und Kunstenstalten, Munich.
Condition B+: creases, repaired tears and abrasions in margins and image.
Given that Hohlwein was a passionate equestrian and a militarist, he was the perfect artist to receive the commission for this poster, which is one of his earliest. Advertising a riding company, he uses the division between the clear sky and the foliage to create a gate which the proud rider is jumping over. The use of the diagonal in the jumping horse gives a strong dynamic to the image, which is a masterpiece of illustration and composition. This is the version before text. DFP III 1348, Stuttgart 21 (var).
