Wilkinson studied at the Berkhampsted School of Art and began his artistic career contributing drawings to The Illustrated London News and The Illustrated Mail. He also studied figure painting at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris. Although he became specifically renowned for his maritime paintings, he was also a prolific poster designer, designing posters for several of the British railway companies. The beautiful Monsal Dale is situated in Britain's Peak District, in Derbyshire. The Headstone Viaduct was constructed in 1863 and its five spans cross over the River Wye, it was closed to train traffic in 1968. The original painting for this poster is in the National Railway Museum, London.
