POSTER: RUDOLF BIRCHER (1911- ) AINO UND ALVAR AALTO. 1948. 51x35 inches.

RUDOLF BIRCHER (1911- ) AINO UND ALVAR AALTO. 1948.
51 1/4x35 1/2 inches.
Condition A-: minor restoration in top left corner; repaired tears at edges. Two sheets.
Bircher graduated from the Kunstgewerbe Schule in 1933, and remained in Zurich where he became an influential professor after the war. Both an active and an eclectic designer, he is perhaps best remembered for the arrow-shaped logo he designed for Swissair in 1951. This poster for a museum exhibition during the Zurichfestwochen is a perfect specimen of Swiss graphic design, with its impeccable typography and well-balanced abstract forms. Celebrating the design work of Finland's great Alvar Aalto, Bircher incorporated the Finnish flag into the design, which is as well organized and streamlined as any of Aalto's furniture or architectural projects. Schweiz p. 186.
