(PRESIDENTS.) Two letters, each Signed: Martin Van Buren * Calvin Coolidge. Van Buren. LS, "M. VanBuren," as Secretary of State, to attorney Richard K. Call, sending a translation of a letter from Minister Resident from Spain [Francisco] Tacon [not present], promising to send copies of a document that includes an "Index of Names" to Pensacola and Havana, and noting that the original document is being kept by Judge [Thomas] Randall in Florida. Coolidge. TLS, as Vice President Elect, to industrialist Frederick S. Peck, thanking for his support as [Republican] National Committeeman [from Rhode Island], and hoping for continued support. Together 2½ pages, 4to, Van Buren's written on recto and verso of single sheet, Coolidge's on "Executive Department" stationery; moderate staining to Van Buren's affecting few letters of signature and couple words of text, faint marginal discoloration to Coolidge's from prior matting, folds. Coolidge, 14 December 1920: "Now [that] the election is over I want to express to you my thanks for the work you did as National Committeeman from your State. We have accomplished an unsurpassed victory, which places on us a great responsibility. Elections are won or lost long before election day. Our country has shown a determination to secure a sound American government. The office to which I am chosen is not one of great responsibility but I hope it may be helpful to Senator Harding. We shall need a continuation of that patriotic effort . . . ."
