(RHODE ISLAND.) Manuscript record book of the Know Nothing Party, Twig No. 18. [46] manuscript pages: 5 pages of the local's manuscript constitution, the state council's printed constitution laid in, a 12-page list of 282 member signatures and addresses, and 28 pages of minutes. Folio, 1/2 calf, minor wear; presentation letter dated 1930 tipped in to front free endpaper. [Providence, RI], 27 July 1854 to 6 June 1855

  • Notes: The secretive American Party, better known as the Know Nothings, were a popular but short-lived force in American politics from 1854 to 1856, with a distrust of immigrants and Catholics as their main defining feature. They had substantial success in Rhode Island; the state's governor was a strong supporter.
This minute book, kept by a local party chapter in a Providence neighborhood, never mentions the party by name. Article 1 of their constitution states that 'this association shall be known as Twig No. 18 of the State of Rhode Island.' Article 2 limits membership to Protestant citizens, and 'one or both parents, and one or both grand parents, must have taken an active part in the American Revolutionary War.' Considering that in 1854, a typical young adult's parents might have been born in 1800 or 1810, this provision must have been generally ignored. The rules said nothing about race, but on 2 November the minutes recorded with apparent surprise that 'there were several names of colord persons proposed. It was voted to refer them to the State Council.' The party's short-lived popularity is reflected in the 4 April 1855 entry: 'This being Election Day. . . the American Party swept the state clean . . . and sounded the death knell of the old parties.' Among the notable members who signed their allegiance here to the Know-Nothing cause were Benjamin Tucker Eames, #141, who later served as a United States Representative.
