ROOSEVELT, THEODORE. Typed Letter Signed, as President, to Lawrence F. Abbott, son of Outlook editor Lyman Abbott,

WORRIES THAT A BRYAN WIN WOULD SACRIFICE MORALITY TO PROSPERITY ROOSEVELT, THEODORE. Typed Letter Signed, as President, to Lawrence F. Abbott, son of Outlook editor Lyman Abbott, returning an article [not present] giving a portrait of the voter who will decide the winner in the 1908 presidential race, declining to write an article in the Outlook during the presidential campaign, and expressing his opinion that Bryan winning now would be worse than his winning in 1896 because he would not hold moral rectitude above financial prosperity. 2 pages, small 4to, White House stationery, written on the first and terminal pages of a single folded sheet; minor scattered soiling, minor creases in margins near center vertical fold. Oyster Bay, 16 September 1908

  • Notes: ". . . I quite agree with you that it is a lifelike portrait of the man who will probably decide, if not whether our next President is Taft or Bryan, at least whether Kansas and some other States will vote for one or the other.
". . . I do not bellieve that it would be wise or proper for me to write the kind of statement you suggest for The Outlook. . . . I do not think the President in the middle of a campaign should appeal thru any periodical, even his favorite . . . . I am growing to believe in your view that it would be worse to have Bryan come in now than it would have been if he had come in in 1896, because it can never be as important to keep the financial prosperity of the country as it is to preserve the mighty moral advance which in the present case has gone hand in hand with prosperity. . . ."
