ROSENTHAL, JOE (1911- )

"Flag Raising on Iwo Jima." Silver print, 9 3/4x7 3/4 inches (24.8x19.7 cm.), with a hand stamp and notations, in ink, on verso. 1945

  • Notes: The deaths at Iwo Jima accounted for one third of the Marine fatalities in all of World War II. The battle raged for more than a month, killing almost 7,000 Americans. The taking of Mount Suribachi was monumental for the war weary soldiers who captured it, and a small flag was raised in celebration. Joe Rosenthal arrived on the scene as they were replacing the small flag with a larger one and with one click he created the most iconic image in American history. This image of will, strength, and national pride has been reproduced thousands of times, turned into a stamp, awarded a Pulitzer and became a life-sized sculpture at Arlington Cemetery. More recently, a group of firefighters spontaneously recreated the scene in the ruins of the World Trade Center; the image lives on.
