Autograph Letter Signed, "J Ruskin," to engraver John Henry Le Keux ("Dear Mr L Keux"), with a small ink drawing, requesting final adjustments to an illustration before sending to the publisher. The drawing, small sketch demonstrating desired effect for illustration's background, at lower left recto, ½x1 inch. 1½ pages, 8vo, written on recto and verso of single sheet; small hole at upper right with minor loss to text repaired recto with tissue, remnants of mounting along right edge verso, faint scattered soiling, collector's blind stamp at upper edge ("Rob'tCole"), folds. "The plate will do very nicely now with the least bit more trouble. You must still brighten the capital a little and darken the background so as to bring it all out in light--you will see . . . . The background should imitate the stippled touch, which will make it transparent. Seen through a magnifying glass, the background should be [drawing] so, only with no blots, and shaded off to edges faintly. . . . I shall not want another review--when the alterations are made, please send plate to Mess'rs J[ohn] & E[dward Bumpus]."
