  • Notes: This image is one of a series of paintings and photographs Sheeler completed of the "Doylestown House," in Bucks County, in 1917. Theodore Stebbins, Jr. and Norman Keyes, Jr. wrote of Sheeler's emerging aesthetic: "In that year he found his own spare, modern vision, and he developed the means of expressing it in various media, most notably in conte crayon and other means of drawing, and photography. See: charles sheeler: the photographs (Boston, 1987), p. 8.
