Shigeo Fukada Hand 84 Kyoto. 1984 40.75 x 27.75 inches. Condition A. A graduate of the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music in 1956, Fukadas unique Pop Art style shows the influence of the Surrealists as well as the Dutch engraver M.C. Escher. indeed, Fukadas work utilizes many of Escher's artistic tropes, such as his love of graphic intricacies, optical illusions and "metamorphoses" Escher's term for when shapes change and interact with each other in varying ways depending on perspective. Since the mid 1980s, Fukada has produced a seemingly endless series of visual puns, often incorporating elements of the human body in a style which he once referred to as "Images of Illusion." This poster, "Hand 84 Kyoto," which was created for a craft exhibition, is an archetypal example ofhis work. Fukada is chairman of JAGDA, the Japan Graphic Designers Association. ref.
