SLAVE DOCUMENT

Important Autograph Manuscipt Document, being an appraisal for estate purposes of slaves owned by John M. Elder at his death; listing 143 slaves by name, with a dollar value placed next to the name. 4 pages, folio. Np, 19 September 1862 Extracted from a larger appraisal which must have included the total assets of the deceased. The estate was obviously a large one since it included 143 slaves who were most likely involved in the operations of a large plantation. Being a part of a larger appraisal, this document does not give the location where Mr. Elder's property was located.
