(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION--DOUGLASS, FREDERICK.) Report of a Public Meeting held at Finsbury Chapel Moorfields, to Receive Frederick Douglass, the American Slave, on Friday, May 22, 1846. Joseph Sturge, Esq. In the Chair. 24 pages, disbound; some residue to the spine; paper evenly toned; small institutional stamp on the title-page. London, 1846

  • Notes: the rare first separate printing of this speech, usually found as an addendum to the 1846, third English edition of Douglass's "Narrative." Douglass opens his speech by explaining the American system of government and the difficulty presented by states' rights to legislating against slavery. He then proceeds to describe the auction of a man and wife, and the degradation of the woman, being stripped naked before the crowd. The couple were sold to different owners, and when the husband tore away from his new owner and begged to be bought with his wife, he was beaten and died on the spot. This speech was taken down stenographically and the writer has included the audience's cries of "hear, hear," "yes," and "amen."
