(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) DOUGLASS, FREDERICK. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. Written by Himself.

AN EXCEPTIONAL COPY (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) DOUGLASS, FREDERICK. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. Written by Himself. Portrait frontispiece. 170 pages. Small 8vo, original decoratively blind-stamped cloth with title in gilt up the spine; binding slightly skewed, early ownership signature of Martha Shipley, otherwise an exceptional copy. Wortley,1846

  • Notes: third english edition, being the rare wortley edition in which is printed a thirty page speech by douglass not appearing in any other edition. While on his tour of the British Isles, Frederick Douglass attended an anti-slavery meeting at Finsbury Chapel in Moorfields. After being introduced by Joseph Sturges who chaired the meeting, Douglass rose and spoke at length about his life as a slave, his escape, and slavery in the United States. Douglass got into an argument with one individual who shouted "it is not true," when Douglass said that slaves were used to build churches. Douglass proved it by reading from an advertisement for slave labor in an American newspaper.
