  • Notes: first edition. Pierre Toussaint (1766-1853) was born a slave in Haiti. His master taught him to read and write and brought him to New York in 1787. There young Pierre became an apprentice to one of the city''s leading hairdressers. Toussaint eventually became a popular and wealthy hairdresser himself. He later met and married another slave named Noel. Together they helped many slaves find freedom. New York''s Cardinal Terence Cooke placed Toussaint''s name on the Vatican''s short list for sainthood in 1981. In 1996, the Vatican approved him for the complex "vetting" process for sainthood.
