THE LAST ISSUE (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) GARRISON, WILLIAM LLOYD, EDITOR. The last issue of "The Liberator" Volume XXXV, Whole Number 1803 for Friday September 29, 1865. Large bi-folium, 4 pages; creased where folded; some very slight wear at the broad margins, otherwise a very nice copy. Boston, 1865

  • Notes: rare, last issue of william lloyd garrison's liberator, the most important abolitionist newspaper of the 19th century. The main front-page article, "The Constitutional Amendment" begins, "In view of the pending Constitutional Amendment abolishing slavery, which can only become of binding effect, when ratified by the legislatures of three fourths of the States; it is of the greatest importance to determine the number of states which are to be recognized as part of the Union. It seems perfectly manifest that only those States which are represented in Congress, and are thus recognized by that body as having a voice in the national government are to be practically regarded as States in the Union." Other articles by Lydia Maria Child, William C. Nell and Thaddeus Stevens.
