(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) LINCOLN, ABRAHAM. From American Bondage to the Halls of Congress.

(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) LINCOLN, ABRAHAM. From American Bondage to the Halls of Congress. Chromolithographic poster, 28 x 22 inches; printed on heavy stock; paper toned with a few small marginal stains; two vertical cracks to the bottom center, 5-1/4 and 2-1/4 inches, both repairable. Np, 1897

  • Notes: a very scarce uplift poster, by a civil war veteran, and stove salesman. A portrait of Abraham Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation surrounded by 18 vignettes depicting life under slavery and the subsequent march of African-Americans toward success and respectability, including "The Home of the Typical Negro Family of Today," "The Negro Exorcising(sic) the Right of Franchise," and "Taking the Oath of Office."
Although this print appears to be quite accomplished, the creator Abraham M. Truby does not seem to have left any other surviving works. The only man by that name appearing in the census records of the period was Abraham Musser Truby (1843-1917), a white Civil War veteran and stove salesman from rural Dublin, Ohio. This print is not in WorldCat, not found at auction, and is apparently unknown other than a brief mention in Library Lectures issued by Louisiana State University in 1965.
