Sol LeWitt

Three postcards, two with small ink drawing, each Signed "Sol & Carol" or "SL," to Sy and Gloria Greenbaum.

The first, "Hello from China," written above a red ink stamp showing two star shapes and a square filled with lines resembling his watercolor and woodcut work, A Square Divided Horizontally and Vertically into Four Equal Parts, Each with a Different Direction of Alternating Parallel Bands of Lines (1982). The second, "Keep well," written above drawing resembling the ink stamp in first postcard but with fill lines rotated differently. The third, "SL," with drawing resembling his ink-and-graphite drawing, Form Derived from a Cube (Drawing No. 3) (1981). Each oblong 12mo; some smudging to ink stamp of first, faint scattered soiling, each with cancelled postage stamps.

[Shanghai], 15 January circa 1981; Paris, 31 January; London, 29 April 1981.

  • Notes: Throughout the latter part of his life, Sol LeWitt would often send postcards containing small drawings or paintings, usually sketches of artworks he was working on at the time, but sometimes they included more finished works in gouache, suggesting that he took this practice to be something more than mere doodling.

Provenance: Sol Lewitt to his accountant Sy Greenbaum by gift; thence to the current owner by descent.
