SOL LIBSOHN (1914-2001)
A selection of 6 photographs of New York City. Silver prints, the images measuring 4¼x6½ to 13x9 inches (10.8x16.5 to 33x23 cm.), three with Libsohn's signature and three with a title in pencil or ink on verso. Circa 1940s-50s; two printed 1970s

Provenance: The Collection of Romana Javitz; by descent to the Present Owner

Romana Javitz (1903-80) was curator of The New York Public Library's Picture Collection from 1928-68, where she assembled one of the most historically important and artistically significant collections of 20th-century photographs. An early champion of photography who said "great photography ranks with great art," she established personal relationships with Libsohn as well as Dorothea Lange, Lewis Hine, and Berenice Abbott, encouraging artists to bring her work, which she subsequently purchased for the library. Libsohn, a self-taught photographer, co-founded the Photo League in 1936 with Sid Grossman. He was also employed by Roy Stryker for the Standard Oil Company documentary project and the Federal Art Project.

  • Condition: Libsohn's photographs of New York are overall in excellent condition. The prints are rich and contrasty, with plenty of depth and crisp detail.

The photographs present some minor issues when examined under raking light, which are listed below.

Print 1 (Ice cream store - Mike Pandemy): Excellent condition. No issue found on the surface of the print
Print 2 (Phone entrance): Excellent condition. No issue found except for a few tiny chips on the extreme left edge of the print. (the print has no margins)
Print 3 (Lazarides - machinery tools): Fingerprints and faint scuffs visible only under strong raking light in the dark areas of the print. (the print has no margins)
Print 4 (couple in front of window shop): Excellent condition. 2 corners slightly rubbed. (the print has no margins)
Print 5 (Florist): Good condition. Surface impressions visible only under strong raking light and scrutiny: two tiny dimples in the center of the image in the dark area. Cluster of linear creases with no emulsion loss (upper left corner), soft and small half-moon crease (top right corner), small cluster of half-moon creases (bottom left corners). The print has no margins and evidences a few scattered chips and losses around the edges, more particularly at the bottom edge (left side).
Print 6 (Woman with hat): Excellent condition. We can notice a few tiny white spots but these are in the negative, not on the surface of the print. Sheet slightly rippled (Bottom white margin).
