(SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR.) Theodore W. Noyes. Oriental America and Its Problems, extra-illustrated by the author. 205 original photographs, 8 clippings, a manuscript and an original drawing laid down on 110 album leaves with manuscript captions, interleaved with ix, [3], 236 printed pages. Large 8vo, worn; album leaves somewhat warped but otherwise minimal wear to contents. Washington, 1903

  • Notes: "Oriental America and Its Problems" was written by journalist Theodore Noyes (1858-1946) of the Washington Evening Star to address the complex issues surrounding the ongoing occupation of the Philippines, based on his own travels in the islands. It also includes discussion of Java and Ceylon. The book was published as a fairly slender 236-page volume without illustrations. This is apparently his own personal copy, greatly expanded with original photographs captioned in his own hand. It also includes a manuscript list by Major Owen Sweet titled "Key to Jolo groups of Sultan and Governor and their subordinates"; and an ink and wash portrait of revolutionary leader Emilio Aguinaldo. A newsprint sheet of promotional blurbs for the book by William H. Taft and others is folded and laid in.
