STANLEY, HENRY M. Letter Signed, to Harper and Brothers, concerning his account and informing them that he has traveled to the Congo afterrumors of a disaster affecting the expedition. 1.5 pages, two 4to sheets, Expedition Internationale du Haut-Congo letterhead; written inpencil, toned, mat burn. "Congo River," 29 January 1883 E500/750 ". .. I have been compelled to pay a flying visit to the Congo on account of some sensational telegrams sent over Europe about some disasters that were reported to have overtaken this Expedition but I find them to have been based upon a trivial squabble. All is now happily arranged in this region, and if I am relieved I shall hasten back to complete my new book which I had just commenced when I received a warmly expressed letter begging me in the name of King Leopold to examine and report upon the reported disaster . . ." Stanley (1841- 1904) led the expedition in search of David Livingstone finding him in1871; led another expedition a few years later on behalf of King Leopold of Belgium to explore the headwaters of the Congo River with the prospect of colo-nization.
