(SUFFRAGE.) Anthony, Susan B. Autograph Letter Signed, "S. B. Anthony," to Isabella Beecher Hooker, concerning her trial in Rochester for vot-ing in the 1872 presidential election and the arrestof Victoria Woodhull for obscenity. Written on the conjugate leaf of an Autograph Letter, unsigned, by Hooker to Anthony, concerning Woodhull's "obscene" accusation that Reverend Henry Ward Beecher ( Hooker's half-brother) committed adultery. Each 2 pages, folded 8vo sheet. Rochester, 1 December 1872 [Anthony letter] E2,000/3,000 Anthony's ALS: "Yours mailed the 25th & 27th both came duly - but the verdict . . . of [the] U.S. commissioner's examination forbid thoughtsoutside of making ready for my arguments showing the legality of my voting. But Judge Seldon was not ready to make his argument so all is postponed to the 18th inst. I send you a paper, though I know your soul is too full to heed it. I mail with this yours of 28th to your Brother [Henry Ward Beecher] with the best word I could say - telling him he must be able to proclaim a social theory to the world that would save the best men from living a lie to their theories, not only, but to their dearest and near-est friends. Did Mrs. Merriwhether of Memphis send you her article? She was in Boston and saw and heard Victoria's speech there, which the Weekly repeats, & she pronounces the pretense of arrest & imprisonment for obscenity . . ." Hooker's AL Hartford, 27 November 1872: " . . . The letter implored Henry to allow me to stand by his side while he confessed the truth . . . I knew it was too late last week to hope for that Sunday, but it would prepare the way for this com-ing Sunday & here is a copy of one I'm sending today. While I feel just as you do toward Mrs. L. I have knownall the time that her guilt was great, since woman's nature especiallya mother's is a spiritual teacher, she cannot resist without doing violence to her whole being . . ."
