Suntory Orange. 1978 40.375 x 29.375 inches. Condition A. Yokoo can be credited as the artist who introduced Pop Art to Japan. He was alsothe first to mix Western styles with Japanese iconography in a unique East-meets-West style that utilizes collage, photomontage, cartoon- style graphics, and airbrush to create extravagant artistic fantasies. The attitude of the Japanese towards marketing ingeniousness allowed Yokoo a kind of artistic freedom he would have been hard pressed to find in western economies where marketing often acts to censor creativity. This poster for Suntory, for whom Yokoo regularly producedposters is a perfect example of his unique style: a vision of an island paradise, integrating a swimming pool, Hawaiian dancers, and palm trees on a blue-green flat background. The resulting image is totally bizarre and a bit unreal, but quite evocative nonetheless. Even the product packaging, on the bottom right, can't ruin the image!ref.
