black morocco strip within gilt fillet around an inner border containing inlaid brown strapwork and floral designs of green and purple, framing a rectangular panel with arabesque corner ornaments outlined with a narrow border of inlaid crimson morocco, filled with an elaborate design of curling stylized leaves, in inlaid green, brown, purple and crimson morocco, gilt-tooled and within stippled gold leaf, the center with a shaped oval, gilt-tooled and containing a gilt and inlaid crimson crown surmounting an inlaid crimson shield bearing a lion within stippled gold leaf; spine in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands, gilt-lettered in two compartments, a repeated panel with an inlaid floral ornament on a gilt-stippled background in the rest; turn-ins with a continuous gilt floral design within two narrow borders of inlaid black morocco, watered silk endleaves, by RIVIERE & SON; gilt edges; green straight-grain morocco velvet lined box with brass catches. (London), [circa 1916] ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, 11 leaves plus 2 blank fly-leaves at front and 3 at back (17 numbered pages plus colophon page), on linen guards, written in a fine upright semi-Gothic book hand in black, title in red within a full ornamental border; one full-page miniature, signed by Sangorski with his "AS" cipher and dated 1916, 10 illuminated initials, 4 incorporating elaborate borders with penwork tracery, other verse-opening initials in alternating red, blue, or gold, some with penwork tracery; the full-page and smaller borders in a variety of green, purple, blue, red and other colors, all in stylized floral and foliate design and lavishly heightened with gold. Colophon statement: "This manuscript Adieux A Marie Stuart by Algernon Charles Swinburne, was designed, written out, and illuminated by Alberto Sangorski for Messrs R. Riviere & Son... The miniature in frontispiece was taken from the painting by the late W.P. Frith, R.A. This manuscript will not be duplicated [signed:] Alberto Sangorski."
